Dumfries and Galloway Participation and Engagement Network (PEN)

The Participation and Engagement Network is a way for members of the public, patients, carers and community groups to get involved in improving local services in Dumfries and Galloway. We might ask you to take part in a survey, a discussion or an event. You don't need to take part every time, just whenever suits you.

Anyone aged 16 or over who has an interest in the services delivered within Dumfries and Galloway is welcome. We want the Network to reflect the diversity of our community and we welcome people from all backgrounds.

The Network is managed by NHS Dumfries and Galloway on behalf of the Community Planning Partnership.

Participation and Engagement Working Group

The remit of the PEWG:

• To develop a co-ordinated programme of participation and engagement activity across partners;
• identify opportunities for joint engagement work to maximise links between related issues and reduce costs;
• to share expertise and experience across partners; publicise the engagement opportunities available from local partners and feedback published through a regular newsletter;
• and oversee the development and working of the Participation and Engagement Network.

The current membership of the PEWG comprises:

• The Echo
• SWestrans
• D&G College
• Healthcare Improvement Scotland
• Skills Development Scotland
• Community Action through Participation and Engagement Network (CAPE)

The Working Group meetings are workshop format and take place quarterly.

Community Councils

Community Councils are voluntary bodies which exist within a legal framework and have been granted legislative rights of consultation. Community Councils are made up of local people from age 16 onwards, who are elected every four years to gather and represent the views of their community. They are consulted by law on issues that are important to communities and citizens and are also requested to engage with their communities on issues important to them. Many Community Councils are involved in local projects and may also administer Windfarm funding for their community. All Community Council meetings are open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend and support their local Community Council. To find out visit the Community Councils Website here.

Third Sector

The wide range of voluntary and community organisations throughout Dumfries and Galloway play an important part in Community Planning and offer many opportunities for people to get involved.

The voluntary and community sector - known as the Third Sector - can influence the design and management of public services in our region, making sure they meet local needs. Many voluntary organisations are contracted to deliver key public services.  

Third Sector Dumfries & Galloway is an operating name of Dumfries and Galloway Third Sector Interface and has a remit to deliver in four key areas:

• to support and develop and a strong Third Sector
• develop social enterprise
• develop volunteers and volunteering 
• connect the Third Sector to Community Planning
